Facing an urgent need to upgrade from single-phase to three-phase power ahead of a cold winter, Gascosage Electric Co-Op partnered with the team at Sellenriek Energy to enhance load capacity and system reliability for its rural customers. The goal? To prevent seasonal overload and ensure long-term performance across a key section of their network.
Sellenriek Energy was trusted to handle the entire project from planning and equipment mobilization to construction and final inspection. The project wasn’t without its complications, like poor underground utility locates and multiple road crossings, but through clear communication, the right equipment, and a commitment to quality, the Sellenriek team delivered a timely, durable solution that exceeded all expectations.
What follows is a breakdown of how this full-scope rural infrastructure upgrade was completed safely, efficiently, and with lasting value for the co-op and its members.
CHALLENGES
The biggest challenge for Gascosage Electric Co-Op was getting the upgraded three-phase line in place before winter. Their single-phase line couldn’t keep up with growing demand, and the system needed more capacity to prevent outages during cold-weather peaks.
One of the most complex hurdles the team faced included locating buried phone lines. The maps and marking provided were often inaccurate, which meant crews had to stop work, request new locates, and wait for confirmation, sometimes multiple times on the same stretch of road. This hindered the process and required constant back-and-forth with the phone utility.
Crews also had to safely cross paved roads and blacktops, which meant setting up signs, rerouting equipment, and staying alert to traffic at all times. These types of field conditions required patience, flexibility, and strong communication with the co-op to keep everything moving smoothly.
PROCESS
Sellenriek Energy was involved with this project from inception to completion, leading the project as a turnkey provider. Once the scope was approved by Gascosage, Sellenriek Energy mobilized its crew and equipment to begin full-scope construction.
The process included:
- Deploying small and large bucket trucks, a digger truck, pull trailers, rope brake systems, and wire trailers to manage all material and equipment on-site.
- Setting new poles and clearing the path for safe and efficient wire stringing.
- Stringing and tying in the new three-phase conductor to relieve system load.
- Setting up road signage and safety flags to manage traffic and protect workers during blacktop road crossings.
Throughout the project, the team maintained constant communication with Gascosage to align on adjustments, field conditions, and quality expectations.
RESULTS
Once the line was ready and energized, the team completed what’s called a “bump over,” moving all transformers and service taps from the old line to the new one. After that, the old poles and wires were safely removed and cleaned up.
Sellenriek Energy performed a final inspection to make sure everything matched the plans and safety standards. Gascosage’s team then completed their own walk-through. The only adjustment needed was a single anchor reset, proof of how well the project was executed.
In the end, the work was completed before on time, with minimal disruptions, and Gascosage got the upgraded capacity they needed to serve their members more reliably through the winter and beyond.
Long-Term Value
By delivering this project to spec, Sellenriek Energy ensured long-term reliability for Gascosage’s network. Proper installation techniques, careful conductor clearances, and attention to safety protocols all contributed to the durability of the final project.
“Quality is job one for Sellenriek Energy. When we deliver a project, we make sure it meets the client’s expectations and that their members are treated with care and respect.” – David Hudson, Supervisor at Sellenriek Energy
